Les Cricétidés sont une famille extrêmement diversifiée de rongeurs. C’est l’une des plus grandes familles de mammifères. La plupart des Cricétidés ressemblent à des souris ou des rats : ils ont un petit corps un peu allongé, ils sont gris ou marron avec une longue queue, de grands yeux, de grandes oreilles et des moustaches. Cependant, les formes du corps dans ce groupe varient. Les Cricétidés sont petits (8 g) à grands (2 kg). Le dimorphisme sexuel varie selon les espèces : dans certains cas, les mâles sont plus gros que les femelles, et dans d’autres cas, les femelles sont plus grandes que les mâles. Certaines espèces ne présentent pas de dimorphisme sexuel du tout. Il existe diverses spécialisations pour les différents modes de vie au sein de ce groupe, comme par exemple de longues griffes puissantes (Geoxus) adaptées pour creuser, alors que la partie palmée des pattes arrière et la queue en gouvernail des rats musqués sont adaptées à la nage.
